Wuppertal Floating Tram is the only suspended monorail in the world. The construction of this monorail started in 1898 and began to be functional since 1901.
Wuppertal was an extremely inhabited town in the late 19th century due to industrialization. More than 400,000 people lived here and the roads were getting smaller and smaller for the transportation needs of the growing population.
Trams were a must but there was no place for the tracks and the underground subway construction was impossible because the ground was very rocky and with a lot of groundwater. The solution came from the German engineers who proposed the aerial route. As a result, suspension lines were installed.
Wuppertal Schwebebahn travels along a route of 13.3 kilometers, at 12 meters height. The route includes also a 3 kilometer track stretching from Wohlwinkel and Sonnborner Strasse.
Now, after more than a century, the most prominent landmark of the city of Wuppertal is still functional.
