Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque –Precious Symbol of the Arab World
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is an impressive building in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. It is already known that the Arabs build spectacular constructions, but the mosque in the beautiful capital exceeds all expectations. The name of the mosque comes from the Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, a former president of the United Arab Emirates who wanted a structure that could define the cultural diversity of the Islamic world.
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque was built between 1996 and 2007 and is the largest place of worship in the United Arab Emirates. The space it occupies is the equivalent of five football fields and more than 40,000 visitors can admire the splendid building in the same time. The design and the construction of the mosque was a whole adventure, using materials from many countries like Germany, Morocco, Pakistan, Malaysia, Iran, China and even from New Zealand.
More than 30,000 workers and 38 renowned companies took part in raising the mosque. For the foundation of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, were used natural materials because of their hardness that provide better durability. Marble, gold, semi-precious stones, crystals and ceramics are some elements that adorn the great mosque.
The design of the mosque in Abu Dhabi has been extensively discussed and there were even small conflicts between the great architects of the world. The aspect of the construction can be best described as a fusion of Arabic and Persian elements completed by Moorish structures. The main hall of Sheikh Zayed Mosque can accommodated over 7,000 believers, but there are two smaller prayer halls, each with a capacity of 1500 people, one of them being for women.
The carpet in the main hall is considered to be the largest carpet in the world, measuring no less than 5627 square meters. It weighs 35 tons, is made of wool and it was completed in two years. The great hall features 96 marble columns inlaid with nacre, Sheikh Zayed Mosque being one of the few places where you will see such craftsmanship.
The courtyard occupies about 17,000 square meters, featuring a special floral design. It is considered to be one of the most amazing marble mosaics in the world. Inside Sheikh Zayed Mosque there are 7 chandeliers imported from Germany that incorporate millions of glittering crystals.
Therefore, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of the world’s precious buildings, which perfectly symbolizes the richness of the Arab people and their boundless respect for divinity.
