Pozo de las Animas – The Place Where Souls Cry
There are many spectacular places on this planet, but some of them are beyond the significance of this word. One of these places is Pozo de las Animas of the “Well of Souls”, which consists of two amazing sinkholes that are located in Mendoza province, in Argentina. Both were created as a result of the collapse of underground voids determined by the dissolution of gypsum deposits by groundwater.
A thin crumbling wall separated these holes, and experts say that this wall will eventually erode away and the two wells will merge.
The name comes from an ancient Aboriginal legend that talks about a group of Indians who were chased by a rival group. When the night came, the rivals couldn’t see their enemies and they returned to their homes, but in the morning they went back to search for their enemies and began to hear moans and calls of distress. After an advanced search, they found that two huge wells sunk beneath the feat of their enemies and people were dying at the bottom of the wells, as the waters were rising. Since then, the wells have been known under the name of “the place where souls cry” and are now a place of worship.
