Ponderosa Pines – The Behemoths inside the Bryce Canyon National Park

Pinus ponderosa is one the tallest trees of the Southwest and they grow inside the Bryce Canyon National Park, in the narrow alleys formed by the towering rocks on either side. These Ponderosa Pines measure more than 5 feet in diameter and they grow to the incredible heights of 150 feet.

This pine is the major lumber tree in the Southwest and it grows on dry, well-drained, mountain slopes and mesas and can be easily recognized by its unique characteristics: it is tall, straight, it has a thick trunk, rusty orange bark split into big plates and it also has a special smell of vanilla or butterscotch.
