Within a few miles of Stockholm, Sweden, 100 feet below the ground and shielded by 16-inch-thick metal door, there is the Pionen White Mountains bunker, which, after being used in the 1970s by Sweden’s Civil Defense, was decommissioned and transformed into a data center in 2008 by Internet service provider Bahnhof.
WikiLeaks was another company that used the space as a data center HQ.
Due to the fact that the country has one of the world’s strongest laws to protect confidential source-journalist relationships, in 2010 this bunker hosted the servers here.
The bunker has its glass-walled conference room, its unique waterfall features inspired by the 1972 Bruce Dern sci-fi film “Silent Running”, greenhouse, simulated daylight, a huge saltwater fish tank, two submarine engines that act as backup power generators and if we take into account the fact that this place was originally built to survive an atomic bomb, we can say that it is extremely safe.
The most important thing of all is that the employees feel happier working in this environment and are more productive.
