The rising sea and the river levels have inspired governments around the world to make good investments in flood defenses. The latest solution comes from the Dutch. Citadel is a flotilla of apartments in one modern luxury development, designed by the developer ONW/BNG GO.
The work on the project will begin next year, part of it consisting in halting some flood defenses and letting the water back in.
This new project, dubbed New Water will be re-flooded after centuries of being kept artificially dry. Essentially, a large and pretty heavy concrete caisson provides the foundation, which also includes the car park and supports the apartments. There will be a central courtyard around which there will be arranged 180 modular elements.
According to the architects, when the construction will be finished, the pumps will stop and the site will flood.
