Fascinating Train Route to Copper Mines in the Andes

One of the most amazing railways in the world connects Potrerillos, a now abandoned town, with the filtration plant and workshops in Llanta and Diego de Almagro, where the line links to the Longitudinal Norte and continues to Chanaral and the harbor at Barquito. It is called the Chanaral – Llanta – Porterillos line and is found in Chile, its history starting with its construction in 1916 by the Andes Copper Mining Company in order to connect the Potrerillos copper mine and smelter with Pueblo Hundido.

The most fascinating section of this railway is the ascent between the station Montandon and Portrerillos, where it passes through closed curves and tunnels, always beaten to the slope.
