The internet is full of information about self-driving cars and everyone knows about them, but to many this innovative technology might still feel distant. You might be surprised to find out that your own current vehicle could be powered by a driverless system.
The Cruise self-driving system is a compact computer designed to operate the current class of vehicles. This is the project of Kyle Vogt, who recruited a team of engineers and roboticists from MIT to make it happen.
Now, don’t imagine that the Cruise self-driving car system will drive the car completely on its own, because it will still need feedback from the driver, but you have to agree that it’s a major step up from cruise control.
“Because of Google, people are ready,” Vogt said. “Ten years ago, people would’ve said that this is science fiction. But now, they’re not asking if, but when. There’s a perception that self-driving cars are coming and people are expecting them.”
The Cruise consists of three components, a sensor that is mounted on the top of the car, connected actuators that control the steering and driving and a computer that is installed in the trunk and needs a cubic foot of space.
The initial version of the Cruise self-driving car system costs $10,000.
