Looking at the pictures, you might believe that the Copehill Down on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England is a typical English village, but at a second look you will realize that its architecture is rather German and there is not a single living soul in sight.

Copehill Down is in fact a fake village that was built by the British army during the tail end of cold war in order to practice their urban warfare skills and close quarters fighting. Also known under the name “FIBUA” (Fighting In Built up Areas) village, Copehill Down is actually one of the many villages besprent around the U.K., Europe and the U.S.

Copehill Down was built in 1988 after the model of the German villages in Bavaria, in order to provide troops with a simulated backdrop when training for operations in European theatres including the Cold War, the Balkans and Northern Ireland.
