To mark 30 years from the first Chronomat model, Breitling launched a special series for which it prepared a special image inspired by the requirements of professional pilots.
The story of the Chronomat began in the 1980s, soon after the successor of the founder Willy Breitling had sold the company to the Schneider family. Ernest Schneider’s first mission was to win the auction of the Italian squadron Frecce Tricolori, which in that period was looking for a partner for the official watch of the pilots.
The new owner decided to create an aviation chronograph designed primarily for the technical needs of the pilots. He started to develop the watch in direct contact with Italian pilots and followed the recommendations in all areas. Professionals in acrobatics, Frecce Tricolori members focused on the strength of the housing, on how the link the belt on the housing, on the legibility of the dial but mostly on the ergonomic shape of the buttons, which had to be pressed easily with gloves. Finally, the result convinced from all points of view and, in 1983, Chronomat became the official watch of the Italian pilots.
One year after the event, Breitling decided to mark 100 years since the establishment of the manufactory through the public release of the watch. Chronomat has gradually become a reference among aviation enthusiasts and permanently benefited from all the innovations of the Swiss house related to design and especially in the technical section. In 2009, the emblematic housing covered the first Breitling mechanism.
This year, at the International Exhibition Baselworld 2014, the Swiss manufacturer presents a special series inspired by the original chronograph Frecce Tricolori. The new Airborne Chronograph is distinguished by the shape of the satin finished rotating bezel designed to be easily handled during the flight when pilots wear gloves. The housing is available in two sizes, with diameters of 41 and 44 mm and the dial can be colored black or silver.
On the casing cover appears engraved the name of the anniversary edition and the profile of the Aermacchi aircraft, one of the 10 aircrafts piloted by the Italian squadron. The bracelet is made of a highly resistant fabric developed for military missions. The watch is animated by the automatic mechanism Breitling B-01, COSC certified.
