5 Most Unusual Appearances in the Dakar Rally
Dakar Rally started out 35 years ago from the wish of a motorcyclist lost in the desert of plotting a competition for world adventurers. From then until now, the deserts of Africa and South America have seen thousands of cars and people eager to climb the podium of the competition known for its hardness. Here are five of the most unusual appearances in the Dakar Rally.
In 1981, a French madman by the name of Thierry de Montcorgé made a bet with his friends that he will get to compete in the Paris-Dakar Rally with a Rolls-Royce. And, to the surprise of his palls, Thierry kept his word and went to the famous rally-raid in a Rolls-Royce Corniche.
After a disappointing year in Dakar, Porsche returned in 1986 with a successful trio in the Dakar Rally, made exclusively from 959 models. In other words, with the most advanced sports car of the moment.
Unlike the previous year, when all Porsches abandoned, in 1986, the three 959’s have dominated the rally-raid, obtaining the places one, two and five.
A van with 4×4 drive and generous ground clearance arrived for the first time at the Dakar Rally in 1986. It’s about a Renault B90 that looks simply amazing.
Half van, half truck, the French vehicle was forced to abandon at its first participation, but has tried its luck again in 1987, 1989 and 1991.
How crazy you have to be to participate in the Dakar Rally with a Fiat Panda? Very crazy, especially if you want to keep the original MultiJet diesel engine of 1.3 -liter. But, nevertheless, someone believed that there is enough power in the small thruster so that in 2007 it was marked the first participation in the Dakar of PanDAKAR team.
Although they abandoned, the team returned to Dakar in 2011, 2012 and 2014. At the last edition, the little Panda was set in motion by a 1.9-liter propellant that produces 172 hp.
In 1984, people from Christian Dior enrolled in the Dakar Rally a thing with six-wheel drive 6×4, a V8 from a Chevrolet and with a Porsche gearbox. The odd car failed to finish the race because the chassis broke.
